Student SUPPORTS

More supports for students improves academic achievement and well-being, helping students realize their potential.

Every student in Ontario deserves the opportunity to realize their full potential.

Despite the best efforts of educators, the COVID-19 pandemic has magnified and exacerbated issues of student mental health and well-being and negatively impacted student learning. This is especially true for our Indigenous and equity-deserving students from vulnerable communities, including students with special needs, those with social and mental health concerns, and English as a second language learners.

Whether a student needs special education or mental health supports, extra assistance with literacy or math, or resources to address behavioural issues, their school should have the government resources to provide the needed support.

More supports for students

  • The Ontario government must immediately and dramatically enhance mental health services in schools and expand school-based resources, supports, and services. All mental health interventions should be culturally responsive and adaptable to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • The dramatic increase in violent incidents in schools has repercussions for the learning and well-being of everyone in the school community. Our schools need more professional services and supports, such as guidance counsellors, social workers, and child and youth workers, to help students experiencing behavioural issues.
